a doula prepares her postpartum care after birth

doula, postpartum care plan, resources for moms

what is she including in her postpartum care plan?

i am asking my doula friend, veronika, how she is preparing for the upcoming arrival of her baby. what is she including in her postpartum plan of care?

grammie doula: i would love to hear about your postpartum plans after this baby arrives.

being a doula yourself, i am guessing that you know exactly what you want!

veronika:

during this time i will rely on my family and friends to take care of things around the house.

for the first 2 weeks my husband is taking off work, and the 2nd 2 weeks my mom will be staying with us helping.

thankfully, i have a good friend who lives right next door who can come over when i need to take a quick shower or something.

i’m really blessed to have so much support!  otherwise i’d definitely be hiring a postpartum doula.

grammie doula: what specific preparations have you made for this 4th trimester recovery?

veronika:

right now the things i’m preparing are nutritious bone broths and freezer meals, getting a belly binder, ?hmm i can’t think of much else i’m doing.

oh! elissa orr is encapsulating my placenta and making a tincture for me to use.

i’m definitely using crystal fink as my midwife who provides postpartum care in my home for the first 2 weeks, and well baby and mom care for 6 weeks.

grammie doula: are there any cultural or family postpartum traditions that are meaningful to you?

did you do anything special after the birth of your first child? is there traditional postpartum care that may be specific to your family?

veronika: “quarantina” is a 4th trimester favorite.

yes, i plan on doing a more traditional “quarantina” like they do in peru.

spending 40 days at home to allow myself to heal and establish a good breastfeeding relationship is my number one goal.

grammie doula:

yeah, each of these things are so awesome and i love that you are doing some traditional postpartum care with lots of meaning for you.

I have heard great things about the placental tincture. it seems to work really well  helping with mood fluctuations and energy levels.

i love your list. Thanks for sharing your perspective. you are glowing with happiness and thanks for sharing your plans with me.

side note:

i am so happy that you had maternity photos taken. It’s such a special time to remember each birth and i love your maternity photos with your chickens! photos taken by veronika’s neighbor.

i am excited to meet your baby soon. enjoy these last days before you deliver. thanks for the interview. for helpful ideas on meal preparation after birth, check out postpartum meal preparation ~laura
